Right after visiting the aloe vera farm, we headed straight to the saltworks, still accompanied by the students from San Cristóbal.
Salinas de Tenefé is a historic salt production site and is one of the few remaining traditional saltworks on the island, where salt is harvested using time honored techniques.
Our visit began with an introduction to the saltworks’ history and its status as a family business. We also learned about the nutritional benefits of salt and the key differences between natural salt and industrial salt.
After the presentation, we were taken on a guided tour around the salt flats, where we observed firsthand how salt is carefully collected by hand from the shallow pools. Afterward we enjoyed a peaceful walk along the shore.
To end the day, we got to try various foods seasoned with their salt, including avocado, tomatoes, bread, cheese, potatoes with mojo sauce, and even brownies.
